If you’ve ever wondered if massage therapy helps to relieve pain, Canadian research out of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, shows that this is actually true.
While massage therapy has always been well-accepted for relieving muscle tension and pain, the researchers also found that it triggers biochemical sensors, which send inflammation-reducing signals to muscle cells.
In this study, they also discovered that massage signals muscles to build more mitochondria – the power centers of cells – which play a key role in healing.
Even just 10-minutes of massage was shown to help reduce inflammation in muscles – something athletes and those with inflammation-related chronic conditions, such as arthritis or muscular dystrophy, can benefit from.
