Breast thermography is a diagnostic tool that uses infrared technology to detect temperature variations on the surface of the skin, which may indicate underlying changes in breast tissue. While thermography is not a replacement for standard methods like mammograms or ultrasounds, it can be most useful in certain situations. Here are a few scenarios where breast thermography might be helpful:
Monitoring Breast Health Over Time
For women with breast cysts, fibrocystic breasts, breast pain, lymphatic congestion, hormonal imbalances or even infection, thermography may be used as a tool to monitor changes in breast health over time.
Women with High Breast Density
Women with dense breasts often face challenges with mammograms, as dense tissue can obscure the detection of tumors. Thermography may help detect abnormalities in women with dense breast tissue, as it does not rely on tissue density for accuracy.
Breasts Monitoring after Breast Implants
After breast implant surgery, thermography can help detect inflammation or infection, asses the condition of the implant and serve as a radiation-free non-invasive way of monitoring breast health.
Screening for Early Changes in Breast Tissue
Thermography can be used as an adjunct to traditional screening methods, particularly for women who are at higher risk for breast cancer but want to avoid the radiation exposure associated with regular mammograms. It’s also a tool for women under 40 and don’t qualify for regular mammograms.
Assessing Blood Flow and Inflammation
Breast thermography can highlight areas of increased blood flow and inflammation, which may be associated with developing tumors, cysts, or infections. This can be helpful in identifying abnormalities that might not be visible through physical examination or other imaging techniques.
While thermography can detect patterns of abnormal heat, it is most useful when combined with other diagnostic methods like mammography, ultrasound, or MRI. It is often considered a supplementary tool, rather than a standalone diagnostic method.
