For many women, brain fog is a symptom they live with for months to years before seeking help. It can look different on everyone, but some things might be happening in your day-to-day that are a little out of your normal.
You walk into a room and forget why you’re there.
You read the same sentence three times, and even then it doesn’t fully sink in.
You know the word you want to say, but you can’t quite find the words you’re looking for.
You feel distracted, like you can’t see one task all the way through.
You’re mentally tired, even though you got a good sleep.
You’re taking longer to formulate texts or e-mails.
You’re getting overwhelmed by things you used to be able to manage.
Your productivity at work or tasks at home has gone down – you might need more time to get things done or your quality of work has diminished.
You’re reaching for caffeine more and more often to help you get back to a productive state.
You feel like you’re operating through a fog.
Brain fog is real, it’s not all in your head!
While it’s normal to have some days where you feel a little “off,” or experience a harder time concentrating or a bit of forgetfulness, persistent symptoms should always be explored. At Bronte Wellness, we look beyond the symptom itself to understand what may be contributing to your brain fog.
What Is Brain Fog?
While it’s not officially a medical diagnosis, people often use the term “brain fog” to describe changes in mental clarity and cognitive function.
For some women, brain fog is occasional, happening only once in a while. For others, it can be a daily occurrence that interferes with work, relationships, self-confidence, and everyday tasks.
Why Am I Experiencing Brain Fog?
Brain fog can have many possible contributors. Sometimes, it’s not just one thing.
Poor Sleep
Your brain needs quality sleep to support its basic functions. Attention, memory, learning, and emotional regulation all depend on sleep. If you’re sleeping poorly (whether it’s a quality or quantity problem), it’s no surprise that your mind may feel less sharp.
Hormonal Changes
Hormonal fluctuations can affect mood, sleep, energy, and cognitive function. Many women notice changes in concentration and memory during perimenopause and menopause, but it’s also common for premenopausal women to notice changes around the menstrual cycle.
Stress & Mental Load
When you’re constantly managing deadlines, family, work, and other demands, your brain may simply have too much information to process. Being burdened with a ton of responsibilities will create chronic stress. Chronic stress can interfere with sleep and energy, creating several symptoms, including brain fog.
Blood Sugar Changes
Fluctuations in blood sugar can contribute to changes in energy and concentration for some people. Erratic blood sugar due to diet or underlying health issues leads to fluctuations in energy and brain fog symptoms over the day. Undereating leads to low blood sugar, making focus and concentration an impossible task.
Nutritional Factors
Several processes in the body depend on iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D, among others. These nutrients play important roles in overall health, and when nutritional deficiencies are present, they may contribute to fatigue and difficulty concentrating.
Thyroid Function
Thyroid dysfunction can be associated with fatigue, changes in mood, and difficulty concentrating. Whether it’s an over-functioning or under-functioning thyroid, brain fog can be part of the bigger symptom picture.
The Bigger Picture
Perimenopause, the menstrual cycle, thyroid concerns, stress, nutrient status, blood sugar and other factors can overlap with sleep disruption, fatigue, mood changes, and difficulty concentrating. For most women, it’s not just one thing that’s leading to brain fog. And brain fog isn’t a diagnosis.
That’s why we don’t look at brain fog in isolation.
Your brain, hormones, sleep, nutrition, and stress response are all part of the bigger picture, and you deserve a team of experienced practitioners to help you get back to your productive, focused self.
