About Our Indie Head Massage Therapy
Indie Head Massage, also known as Indian Head Massage or Champissage, was originally derived from Ayurvedic medicine. Used to bring balance to the body by activating marma points (similar to acupuncture points), as well as to hydrate the hair and scalp. Traditionally these techniques were only applied to the face and scalp while seated in an upright position.
Calais Irwin, RMT at Bronte Wellness Boutique has developed her own version of an Indie Head Massage. This treatment is done while the patient is laying down on the massage table. She includes the neck and shoulders into the treatment, easing tension that may radiate up to the face and scalp, to provide an even deeper relaxation experience.
Next sandalwood essential oil is applied to the face with a series of specialized techniques to help relax and stretch the facial muscles around the eyes, forehead, cheeks and jaw. These muscles are used constantly throughout the day for facial expression, talking and chewing food but are often neglected during our day-to-day health and beauty routines.
The final stage of the treatment is a hot oil massage for the scalp and hair. Coconut oil is heated and then massaged into the scalp to provide a deep moisturizing treatment as well as to massage the small muscles underneath the scalp, around the ears and temples. Before the treatment is done, the oil is massaged through the hair all the way to the tips to provide additional moisture to the dry ends of the hair shaft. If dry scalp is a concern for you, it is recommended, if possible, to leave the coconut oil in the hair over night.
