Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid, is a small gland that secretes hormones that play a huge role in body’s overall function, fails to produce adequate hormones. The thyroid is often described as the master gland of metabolic functioning since the hormones that it produces affects the metabolic function of every cell in the body. Thyroid hormones affect energy, metabolism and tissue healing. Hypothyroidism can lead to symptoms of fatigue, weight gain and low mood.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a state in which your thyroid does not produce adequate amount of thyroid hormone. Common symptoms of low thyroid function include:
- Fatigue or feeling burnt out
- Weight gain or inability to lose weight
- Cold body temperature or cold extremities
- Dry or itchy skin
- Increased hair loss
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
- Depressed Mood
- Fluid retention in extremities
Other possible symptoms include irregular periods, breast tenderness, decreased libido, headaches, heart palpitaions, night sweats, joint and muscle pain, sleep disturbances and a feeling of being tired but wired.
Hypothyroidism Labwork & Functional Diagnostic Testing
Hypothyroidism is often not well diagnosed so it’s important to get a through assessment if you suspect you have hypothyroidism. Conventional doctors often just look at one thyroid marker, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH is a signalling hormone whose range is often too wide and is not a good indicator of thyroid function.
Our naturopathic doctors provide full assessments of thyroid function that include functional hormone testing. In additional to TSH, a basic thyroid hormone panel will assess the following:
- Free T4: a precursor to active thyroid hormone
- Free T3: the most metabolically active thyroid hormone
- Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO): an autoimmune marker
- Reverse T3: a thyroid hormone that is formed during periods of chronic stress
At Bronte Wellness Boutique, our goal is to help you restore thyroid function and optimize health. We want to help increase your energy, encourage weight loss and restore normal tissue growth and repair. Naturopathic Medicine works to restore optimal thyroid function by assessing the underlying root cause and asses the need for restoring nutritional deficiencies that impact thyroid function, support the adrenal glands that have a direct impact on the thyroid, restore hormone function and improve natural thyroid hormone production.
